| History | First enrollment issued at Chicago, IL, April 19, 1867. Re-enrolled at Port Huron, MI, July 24, 1876. As Propeller: Bound for Chicago with crew and ten passengers, caught fire three miles below St. Clair at 9:00 A.M. September 4, 1869. The fire originated around the boiler. Ran aground purposely on the Canadian shore and burned all the way to the waterline. Five people had jumped overboard; three drowned, the second engineer, George Ely, a fireman, and a deckhand. The other two were rescued by boats from the shore. Once aground, Capt. Hodges and several of the crew jumped overboard and hailed the passing BELLE OF OSHKOSH which saved the remaining crew and passengers.
