Rebuilds Rebuilt by F.W. Wheeler & Co., at Bay City, MI, winter, 1890-91, as \"not bouyant enough with deckload\"; cut in half and lengthened. Was \"relaunched\" on April 16, 1891 (226 x 34 x 13; 1164 gross - 737 net). Rebuilt by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., after fire 1914-1915 winter. Reduced to pulpwood barge, Sturgeon Bay, WI, in 1938 (254 x 34 x 13.5; 833 gross - 820 net).
History U.S. Marshal sale, May 10, 1933, at Chicago, IL.Lengthened and rebuilt, winter, 1905-1906 (254 x 34 x 13.5; 1439 gross - 1012 net).
Was first steel hull and only sidewheeler built by Frank Wheeler.
As CITY OF CHICAGO: Suffered smashed engine, September 5, 1898, about ten miles off Chicago; $30,000 loss.
Caught fire off Chicago, September 1, 1914, and run alongside pier next to Chicago U.S. Life Saving Service station. Suffered burned upper works. Rebuilt by Manitowoc Dry Dock Co.
Disposition While in tandem tow, barge TRANSPORT, and tow of tug JOHN ROEN, cut adrift in gale and driven ashore, September 22, 1942, near Eagle Harbor, MI, Lake Superior, with load of pulpwood. One life lost on CITY OF ST JOSEPH; both barges total losses and cut up on beach for scrap in 1942-1943.
