Acquired by U.S. Navy from Treasury Dept., on January 30, 1890; commissioned on April 22, 1891. Performed general duties along east coast, 1891-1898. During Spanish-American War, ran from Key West, FL, to squadrons off Santiago and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Assigned to District of Columbia Naval Militia on October 16, 1898, and decommissioned on October 22, 1898. Laid up at Norfolk, VA in 1904-1905. Repaired at Detroit, MI, and transferred to Minnesota Naval Militia; renamed GOPHER while at Detroit, on December 27, 1905. Recommissioned on May 30, 1917, for service at Great Lakes Naval Training Station; decommissioned on April 19, 1919. Recommissioned on May 15, 1921, for duty with Naval Reserve at Toledo, OH. Placed on reduced commission status on October 1, 1922, and departed for Boston on August 5, 1922. Rammed and damaged a lock at Soulanges Canal; apprehended by Canadian authorities. Then taken in tow by naval tug WANDAK, bound for Boston. |
