Vessel History

History Built as \"North Sands\" type cargo vessel and purchased by U.S. Government under Hyde Park Agreement of 1941. Delivered on December 8, 1942, and immediately bareboat chartered to British Ministry of War Transport.Torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine on September 19, 1943, in position 10'S x 68'E, southwest of Chagos Island, about 500-600 miles southeast of Seychelles. Was on voyage Kosseir to Newcastle, New South Wales, under management of J. Chambers & Co., London, Great Britain. Only two crew members survived, drifting ashore on a Japanese-held island after several days, and being taken prisoner.
