History Eirst enrolled at Chicago, IL, June 17, 1854.The ROBERT H. FOSS is listed in Merchant Vessels of the U.S. with her home port as New York City. The annual reports of the Steamboat Inspection Service list her as having had her boilers inspected at New York City sometime in 1873, 1874, and 1876. In 1876 she is listed as an \"elevator.\" She does not appear in the 1876-7 Merchant Vessels under the name ROBERT H. FOSS.
The Lytle-Holdcamper List (as published in Merchant Steam Vessels of the United States, 1790-1868) indicates on page 186 that the FOSS was renamed SOMERSET 3-30-1899 and assigned a new official number. The list also indicates that SOMERSET was changed to an elevator in 1907. None of this has been confirmed.
