History As ERNEST R. BREECH: Ran aground three miles north of Fort Gratiot Light, Lake Huron, April 8, 1965; released April 10.As ERNEST R. BREECH: Struck southwest pier at the Soo, downbound, July 14; sustained a twenty-foot dent to bow plates at waterline. She was grounded near Marine City, MI, in fog, on May 25, 1982. Bound for Detroit, she needed help from two tugs to get released. As KINSMAN INDEPENDENT: Made final call on the Port of Duluth-Superior, Dec. 11, 2002. Carried final load of grain from Duluth-Superior to Buffalo, NY. The last U.S. flag straight-decker in active service. Transferred to Canadian registry in 2004.
Disposition Sold to Marine Recycling Corporation of Port Colborne, ON. Arrived for scrapping in April 2022.
