Commissioned as Navy collier on June 26, 1913. Arrived off Mexico on September 4, 1913, to fuel vessels there, returning to Norfolk on October 13, 1913. Departed Norfolk on October 25, 1913, for Mediterranean, returning to Hampton Roads, VA, on December 18, 1913. In Spring, 1914, served winter maneuvers in Caribbean And Mexican waters. In April, 1914, transported refugees from Tuxpan, Mexico, to Louisiana. Departed New York, November 14, 1914, with Christmas gifts for Mediterranean Fleet and \"people of Europe;\" returned to Norfolk on March 15, 1915. During 1915-1916, engaged in refueling operations, including trip to West Coast in March-June, 1915. During beginning months of World War I, assigned to Atlantic Train, serving eastern seaboard. On April 16, arrived in New York to load aviation materials for Inverness, Scotland; returned to Hampton Roads, VA, on July 5, 1918 and assigned to Naval Overseas Transportation Service for East Coast duty. Detached from NOTS on July 22, 1919, after two trips to Europe with coal and general cargo. Departed Norfolk on July 31, 1919 for six months duty with Pacific Train, then back to East Coast. Sailed for Europe with coal and stores on September 21, 1920. Departed Philadelphia on January 24, 1921, with airplanes, artillery equipment for Guam; then spent two years with Pacific Train. In 1923, brought marines from Nicaragua to Norfolk and arrived at San Diego on May 5, 1923, to resume coastal duties. Departed Pearl Harbor on May 2, 1925 as support vessel for air squadrons in Far East, arriving in Philippines on May 25, 1925, then transported marines to China. From 1925-1932, served as transport in Far East. Reclassified AV-2 on January 21, 1930. Returned to San Diego on May 13, 1932 and decommissioned at Bremerton Navy Yard (Washington) on June 30, 1932. Struck from Navy List on May 19, 1936 and sold on July 29, 1936. With NOTS, shelled by German submarine on August 7, 1918, but suffered no injuries or damage. |
