First enrolled, July/August, 1973.Rechristened at Buffalo, NY, on June 15, 1989. This is the fifth vessel in the American Steamship Co. fleet to carry the name ADAM E. CORNELIUS. As ROGER M. KYES: Surveyed at Sturgeon Bay, WI, on June 24, 1976, after it was discovered to have sustained damage to propeller blades and controllable-pitch hub. Damaged hub and blades replaced. Struck bottom in Buffalo harbor September 22, 1976, sustaining holes in two double bottom tanks and damage to three others. Proceeded to Chicago for survey and repairs. Lost all power in Lake St. Clair on September 7, 1978, requiring tug assistance; towed to Great Lakes Steel dock by tugs MARYLAND and MAINE. While on a run up the Rouge River, she ran into trouble when the vessel's radio mast struck the I-75 freeway bridge over the river July 24, 1983. On August 23, 1984, grounded off McLouth Steel and went crossways in Detroit River's Trenton Channel. Went to the shipyard at Sturgeon Bay. On the afternoon of October 29, 1987, while upbound from Sandusky with coal, the KYES went aground on Gull Island Shoal in Lake Erie's Middle Passage and began taking on water. About 3,000 tons of her coal cargo was transferred to AMERICAN REPUBLIC and the KYES freed herself the next morning. She was drydocked at Sturgeon Bay November 3 for extensive repairs. |
