History As MARY E. HANNAH: Ran aground October 14, 1976, on a reef near St. Helen's Island, west of the Mackinac Bridge. At the time, she was towing a 290-foot barge loaded with over 25,000 barrels of highly flammable toulene. The barge broke loose when the tug went aground and was adrift for about an hour. The next day the tug and barge were towed into port at Mackinaw City by tugs of the Eder Barge and Towing Co. and Selvick Co.Hit north breakwall at entrance to Ludington harbor on August 25, 1977, puncturing fuel tanks and spilling one to five hundred gallons of diesel fuel. The accident occured when the tug lost her steering after a steering cable linkage broke. Tug managed to maneuver barge she was towing alongside the breakwall so it would not block traffic. JOHN PURVIS arrived next day to tow HANNAH and barge to Dow Chemical plant.
