Vessel History

History Laid down for Cie. Generale Transatlantique; requisitioned by U.S. Shipping Board in 1917.Acquired by U.S. Navy, September 22, 1941, as USS MANOMET (AG-37). Reclassified USS ARIES (AK-51), January 7, 1942. Commissioned on July 18, 1942; reported to Naval Transportation Service, Naval Operating Base, Iceland, as local cargo carrier. Returned to Boston in August, 1943, then transferred to Pacific where she underwent further repairs in CA. Departed San Pedro, CA, on September 6, 1944 for Pearl Harbor, then arrived at Manus, October 28, 1944. Remained at Manus as stores issue ship until departing for Ulithi, December 10, 1944. Between December 14, 1944-August 17, 1945, operated from Ulithi as station ship and carried cargo to Guam and Leyte. Arrived at San Francisco, CA, December 24, 1945, after carrying freight to Guam, Leyte, Eniwetok, and Tokyo. Decommissioned at Oakland, CA, on March 28, 1946; transferred to U.S. Maritime Commission on July 1, 1946.
Disposition Scrapped in Hong Kong in 1952.
