Vessel History

History Was contracted for by Cie. Generale Transatlantique, a French firm, and requisitioned by the Emergency Fleet Corp. (U.S. Shipping Board) on August 3, 1917. Acquired from U.S. Maritime Administration by the U.S. Navy on September 19, 1941. Converted to weather patrol vessel by Maryland Dry Dock Co., Baltimore, MD, and designated USS MENEMSHA (AG-39) on October 15, 1941. Was commissioned on January 20, 1942 and immediately placed on loan to the U.S.C.G., for North Atlantic patrol duty. On August 20, 1942, rescued the five sole survivors of the torpedoed Biritsh merchant vessel ARLETTA, returning them to Boston on August 25. On August 11, 1943, midway between the Virginia Capes and the Azores, attacked the surfaced German submarine U-760, but after half an hour discontinued the attack. The damaged sub interned herself in Spain on September 8, 1943. Was transferred to the Coast Guard on October 22, 1943 and struck from the Navy List on October 30, 1943.
Disposition Scrapped by Patapsco Scrap Co., Baltimore, MD, in 1951.
