History Laid down as WAR BANNER, under contract to Cunard Steamship Co., Ltd., agent for the Shipping Controller, London, England. Requisitioned by U.S. Shipping Board under Urgent Deficiencies Act of June 13, 1917.As PHOENICIER, stranded during a gale, October 11, 1923, arriving at Memel from Blyth with coal. Raised seven months later and towed to Memel on May 4, 1924. Declared a constructive total loss, sold in July, 1924, and repaired.
Disposition Sunk by German air attack, April 29, 1940, off Midsund, Norway.
