Rebuilds | Converted from tanker to dry bulk carrier by Port Weller Dry Docks, Ltd., Port Weller, Ont., in 1960 (534.25 x 72.66 x 35.25; 12339 gross - 7322 registered). Received bow thruster and lengthened to 729 feet and equipped with a controllable pitch propeller winter 1975-1976 at Port Weller Dry Docks. |
History | Owners: Anne Thomas Steamship Co., Ltd.; Llanberis Steamship Co., Ltd.; Llangollen Steamship Co., Ltd. (Evan Thomas Radcliffe & Co., Mgrs.), 1953-1960.As WHEAT KING: Stranded on Grays Reef, Lake Michigan, on June 15, 1964. Released next day by USCG MACKINAW. Struck submerged object in St. Lawrence River, August 16, 1964, suffering extensive bottom damage. Struck guide wall in Snell Lock, Massena, NY, April 16, 1967, and settled. Suffered forty-foot gash in starboard bow quarter. In collision with str. HOMER D. WILLIAMS, in fog, in St. Marys River, May 15, 1968. Suffered bow damage and flooded forward peak tank. While undergoing extensive winter work in the dry dock, Port Weller Dry Docks, Ltd., St. Catharines, Ont., suffered extensive smoke damage to crews quarters from fire caused by burning oily waste material in stern and bilges, February 2, 1972. In collision with Canadian propeller LAKE WINNIPEG, May 7, 1972, at Seven Islands, P.Q. Had stern line foul propeller when departing Comeau Bay, August 9, 1973, caused shafting to move aft, resulting in fracture of main engine trust box. Ran aground near Cornwall Island in St. Lawrence River on May 16, 1977. On May 20, still aground, pivoted on rock against which resting, and blocked channel about a day. Freed after lightering. Repaired at Port Weller Dry Dock, summer 1977. Ran aground in Amherstburg Channel on August 30, 1977, blocking channel. Had part of cargo lightered before freed. Used as storage hull in Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1987-1989. |
