History As BEN MOREELL: Collided with and sank carferry ASHTABULA, in Ashtabula, OH, harbor, September 18, 1958.As ALASTAIR GUTHRIE: Began taking water in engine room while loading cargo at International Multifoods elevator, Duluth, about April 17, 1979. Stern settled on bottom of slip. Subsequent inspection revealed that valve in cooling system (sea chest) was left open.
On September 22, 1983, suffered a fire in her #4 compartment. The vessel was carrying barley at the time of the mishap and 146,000 bushels of the damaged cargo returned to Duluth.
