Vessel History

History Hull designed by Samuel Hart, naval constructor. Plates were rolled in Pittsburgh, PA, and transported to Erie for assembly, beginning in late 1842. Commissioned on September 29, 1844. Renamed WOLVERINE on June 17, 1905. Decommissioned on May 6, 1912, after many years of operating from Erie as home port. Loaned to Pennsylvania Naval Militia for summer cruises. On August 12, 1923, broke connecting rod on port cylinder and never again operated. Loaned to City of Erie in 1927 as a historical relic and moored in Misery Bay, a part of Erie Bay, on Presque Isle. During World War I, was designated IX-31 by U.S. Navy. Sold in 1948 in effort to preserve vessel, but effort failed to raise sufficient funds. Was first iron-hulled vessel in U.S. Navy.
Disposition Cut up for scrap at Erie, PA, in 1949. Bow and cutwater erected as monument at Erie.
