Vessel History

Rebuilds Converted to auto ferry for service across Straits of Mackinac, 1940-1941, by Great Lakes Engineering Works, Ecorse, MI (338 x 56.58 x 18; 2666 gross - 1811 net). Tonnage change, 1947 (2501 gross - 1622 net).
History K. & K. Trailer Ferry service was refused a permit by the Interstate Commerce Commission, after planning to carry truck trailers across Lake Michigan. Thus the vessel was never placed in commission by them.As PERE MARQUETTE 17: Driven aground six miles north of Ludington, MI, in blinding snow storm, January 6, 1909, Manitowoc for Ludington. Released two weeks later by tugs WELCOME and KNIGHT TEMPLAR, and taken to Milwaukee for repairs.
Disposition Sold in spring, 1961, to Acme Scrap Iron & Metal Co., and arrived at Ashtabula, OH, May 15, 1961, for scrapping. Removed from documentation, October, 1964.
