Vessel History

History Built under U.S. Maritime Commission contract as L6-S-B1 class bulk carrier.As ASHLAND: Sustained six-foot crack in bowplates about twelve feet above waterline in April, 1978 while docking at Toledo. Damage discovered on upbound trip, repairs at Sault Ste. Marie.
Struck north entry pier at Duluth on May 9, 1979, apparently after being unable to make turn because of thick ice blowing in from Lake Superior. Sustained 2 x 5' hole in port bow, which was repaired at Duluth Port Terminal. Also lost one anchor.
A faulty relay switch resulted in a power outage and the engines to stop while in Lake Superior off the Keweenaw Peninsula on December 11, 1979. The following day, the switch was bypassed and power was restored.
Disposition Sold to Corostel Trading Ltd. \"for scrapping in Canada.\" (CHIPS, October 3, 1987)
