History | Chartered to St. Lawrence & Richelieu Navigation Co., Ltd., Montreal, P.Q., 1845-1865. Served on Montreal-Chambly run, with barge SINCENNES as consort. Chartered as buoy tender to Montreal Trinity House about 1865. Ran as ferry, Lachine-Caughwanaga, 1879-1882. From 1906-1915, ran as ferry, Montreal-Lachine-Chateauguay-Beauharnois. From 1915-1924, ran as ferry, Verdun-LaTortue, P.Q. From 1924-1954, ran as ferry, Valleyfield-Coteau-du-Lac, P.Q. As RICHELIEU: While being operated by Harbour Commissioners of Montreal, sunk in collision with steamer ROCKET, at Cap de la Madeleine, in 1878. Salvaged and converted to ferry. Boiler exploded on September 21, 1883, killing three persons; completely rebuilt. As BEAUHARNOIS: Houses burned off on October 5, 1941. Rebuilt with wheels recessed in hull; hull busselled forward of wheels. Was back into service by spring, 1942. |
Disposition | Made final trip as ferry, September 26, 1954. Sold to Carl Sinray, of Valleyfield, P.Q., who pulled her into a hole on the lake bank, filled around her, removed the machinery, and converted her to a dance hall. |
