Launched as C1-M-AV1 class cargo vessel for U.S. Maritime Commission. Transferred to American Ship Building Co., Chicago, IL, for completion on December 14, 1944, and acquired by U.S. Army Transportation Corps on February 16, 1945. Acquired by U.S. Navy on September 2, 1950 for service in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean (through August, 1951), Mediterranean Sea (through January, 1952), and Newfoundland and Greenland. On December 22, 1959, arrived for berthing with James River National Reserve Fleet and transferred to Maritime Commission. Reacquired by Navy in August, 1961, converted to survey ship at Brooklyn, NY, and in November, 1961, began hydrographic survey work in South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, especially in African waters.
