Vessel History

Rebuilds Stripped of superstructure at East Ninth Street, Cleveland, OH, March-May, 1942; towed to Buffalo in May, 1942, and rebuilt as training aircraft carrier in Michigan Avenue slip, Buffalo, with addition of 550-foot flight deck.
History Leased to T.J. McGuire (Cleveland & Buffalo Steamship Co. (IL), in 1939; sold outright to them in 1941 for $135,000. Sold to U.S. Navy in 1942 for $750,000. Made sea trials out of Buffalo as training aircraft carrier, August 11, 1942, and placed in full commission at Chicago, on August 21, 1942. Retired from Navy in February, 1946.
Disposition Sold to A.F. Wagner Iron Works, Milwaukee, WI, in 1947, at high bid of $46,789; arrived in tow from Chicago, November 29, 1947, at Milwaukee Municipal Open Dock, and scrapping commenced shortly thereafter.
