History | As SYLVANIA (1): In collision with propeller SIR HENRY BESSEMER off Whitefish Point, Lake Superior, June 13, 1905, as a result of misunderstood passing signals. Caused $10,000 loss to SYLVANIA.As D.M. PHILBIN: In collision with propeller JOHN W. GATES, at ore dock, Duluth, MN, August 30, 1916; $2,000 loss to PHILBIN. In collision with propeller BELGIUM, 2 miles NxE of Whitefish Point, Lake Superior, May 19, 1918, in fog. Suffered $5,000 loss. In collision with propeller ORLANDO M. POE near Detroit, July 3, 1922, suffering slight damage. As SYLVANIA (2): Sunk at Peerless Cement Co. dock, Port Huron, MI, while unloading, by Canadian propeller RENVOYLE, June 2, 1967. Raised by McQueen Marine, Ltd., on June 12th, and passed down, Detroit, June 18, 1967, in tow of tugs AMHERSTBURG and ABURG, bound for Lorain - American Ship Building Co. - for repairs. In collision with propeller DIAMOND ALKALI in Detroit River, November 29, 1968. Received new bow at American Ship Building Co., Toledo, OH. Stranded in Detroit River, September 1, 1971; $129,500 loss. Aground at Belle Isle, Detroit River, November 8, 1972, bound for Connors Creek power plant; released after 22 1/2 hours by three tugs. In collision with FRANK PURNELL, in fog, just north of Detroit River Light, June 2, 1973, at 0523; was downbound light. Suffered minor bow damage; to Toledo for repairs. Lost wheel and rudder near Trenton, MI, about August 25, 1973; went to Lorain for repairs. Suffered fire in hold while tied up at Lorain, OH, August 20, 1976. Grounded near Trenton, MI, on July 31, 1976, sustaining $103,000 damage. |
