Vessel History

History First enrollment issued at Buffalo, NY, September 2, 1853. Wreck site was rediscovered by Captain Paul Pelkey, who had been a mate on WESTMORELAND, on July 21, 1872, aboard tug IDA STEVENS.
Disposition Foundered on December 8, 1854, off South Manitou Island, Lake Michigan; seventeen lives lost. Vessel was bound from Chicago for Buffalo, with stops at Milwaukee and Mackinac Island, with cargo of flour and provisions, at time of loss.
