History | As FRANCIS WIDLAR: Stranded on Pancake Shoal, Lake Superior, November 12, 1920. Surrendered to underwriters as constructive total loss. Sold to W.H. Becker, et.al., on May 22, 1921, and resold to Matthews Steamships, Ltd., on July 26, 1921.As BAYTON: Struck lighthouse and west breakwall at Lorain, OH, during 35 m.p.h. gale on May 10, 1949. Released by tugs ARIZONA and TEXAS on same day. Tore an eight foot hole on starboard side amidship, and spent one week at American Ship Building Co.'s Lorain shipyard receiving repairs. Lost rudder on a downbound trip in June, 1966, with cargo of grain, Fort William, Ont., for Port Colborne, Ont. Completed trip in tow. Sold to Marine Salvage, Ltd., Port Colborne and passed down Port Colborne with tugs ATOMIC and AMHERSTBURG on July 3, 1966. Boilers transferred to propeller SHELTER BAY at Rameys Bend, Welland Canal. Hull then released to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co., of Chicago, IL, for use as temporary breakwater at construction site of Burns Harbor, IN. Passed up Detroit, September 26, 1966, in tow of tugs ATOMIC and AMHERSTBURG. |
