History Commissioned as gunboat, May 13, 1897; assigned to North Atlantic Squadron. Operated in Cuban waters during Spanish-American War.Sailed from Hampden Roads, VA, December 24, 1898, for South Atlantic Squadron. Departed Pernambuco, October 16, 1900, for Manila, via Suez Canal, arriving at Manila, January 21, 1901. Departed from Cavite, May 10, 1901, for patrol duty based at Shanghai. Decommissioned at Cavite, June 30, 1904.
Recommissioned April 3, 1906; served on patrol duty out of Shanghai. During WWI, assigned to Yangtze Squadron; became flagship of that squadron on May 23, 1921. Sailed from Hong Kong, May 20, 1922, then departed Cavite, June 2, 1922, arriving at Portsmouth, NH, September 20, 1922.
Made first cruise, July 19, 1923, with Third Regiment, U.S. Navy Reserve, 9th Naval District, arriving at Toledo, OH, August 1, 1923.
Renamed USS DOVER, January 27, 1941; commissioned as IX-30 (DOVER) on November 2, 1942. Served training armed guard crews out of New Orleans, LA.
Decommissioned on December 20, 1945; sold on December 30, 1946.
Disposition Used to raise a sunken tug, then towed out and scuttled in 75 feet of water, off California coast, in 1947.
