History | First vessel in U.S. constructed over 1000 tons, and largest in world. Laid up from 1857-1862, probably at Detroit. On July 1, 1849, stranded on Grosse Point, Lake Michigan; $9,000 loss. 1849, stove hole in hull by striking a submerged rock off Point Pelee, Lake Erie. Beached near Monroe, MI, November 24, 1853; lightered off with slight damage; $300 loss. Ashore four miles from Buffalo, NY, June 26, 1854. |
Disposition | Departed Port Huron, MI, for Buffalo, NY, with lumber on November 12, 1870. Sprang leak and was beached near Port Ryan (Rowen?), Ont., Long Point, Lake Erie, on November 16, 1870, and hull broke in two, a total loss. |
