| History | Rig - Landing Ship-Tank.Commissioned in U.S. Navy on April 19, 1944. Served largely on East Coast during World War II, with no battle stars. Renamed MILLARD COUNTY (LST-987) on July 1, 1955. Struck from Navy List on June 1, 1960 and sold to Federal German Navy for conversion to battle repair ship. Conversion never took place and vessel never was commissioned in Federal German Navy. Sold in November, 1968, for scrapping in Germany. This failed to happen and vessel was converted to hopper dredge under Panamanian registry. Brought to Great Lakes in 1978 for use in Cleveland harbor. Laid up, 1979, at Sandusky, OH. We now learn that she is the ex-ESPERANCE III (Sept. 20), built in 1944 as LST-987. She later was U.S.S. MILLARD COUNTY and was converted to a dredge in 1973 after a plan to convert her to a repair ship for the German Navy fell through. She has been on the Lakes, mostly in lay-up, since 1978. Hank Harvey tells that her present owners are B. & B. Dredge Co. of Crystal River, FL. Capt. Vic Chamberlain says that she was to clear Toledo about June 21 for Rochester where she apparently has a dredging job. (Chips 6/27/87) |
