As UNITED STATES GYPSUM: Grounded at Alpena, MI, on March 30, 1968; released by Canadian tug AMHERSTBURG on April 1, 1968.Grounded at Toledo, OH, November 4, 1972, causing damages totaling $125,000. Propeller removed and rudder and shaft locked in position to finish season as a manned barge on coal run from Toledo to Detroit. On November 10, 1972, in vicinity of entrance to East Outer Channel, Detroit River, Lake Erie, near Amherstburg, Ont., collided with towing tug, MAINE, and beached to prevent sinking. Raised and arrived at Zug Island, Detroit, to unload coal cargo on November 11, 1972, then taken out of commission. Second claim loss set at $58,000.
Downbound through Snell Lock 0325, May 9, 1973, in tow of tugs SALVAGE MONARCH and HELEN MCALLISTER, bound for Quebec. Cleared Quebec at 0800, May 12, 1973 in tow of German tug FAIRPLAY X, in tandem with steamer HENRY G. DALTON, bound for shipbreakers in Vado, Italy. Broke towline and sank off Sydney, N.S., on May 26, 1973. |
