Vessel History

History On October 20, 1954, caught fire, burned, and sank. Hull reportedly scrapped at Buffalo, NY, in 1956.As CITY OF CLEVELAND: Burned at fit-out dock of Detroit Ship Building Co., at foot of Orleans Street, Detroit, MI, on May 13, 1907. Trial trip was not made until April 27, 1908.
As CITY OF CLEVELAND III: While on cruise with Benton Harbor (MI) Chamber of Commerce, was in collision in fog with Norwegian freighter RAVNEFJELL off Harbor Beach, MI, Lake Huron, on June 25, 1950. Five passengers were killed. Vessel never sailed again.
Disposition After being laid up at Detroit, MI, 1950-1954, sold to Ventimiglia Demolition Co., Detroit, MI, and moved across river to Sandwich, Ontario, for dismantling. Hull was scheduled for conversion to crane barge for use in building St. Lawrence Seaway.
