Vessel History

Rebuilds Documented measures, New York, NY, 1920 (209.25 x 32 x 16.33; 957 gross - 516 net).
History Sunk on May 1, 1898 during Battle of Manila Bay, by fleet under Admiral Dewey. Raised under contract, overhauled, and refitted at Hong Kong; placed in commission there on April 11, 1900 by U.S. Navy. Anchored off Canton, China, as protection to American shipping, June 5-October 18, 1900, sailed from Hong Kong for Cavite, P.I., November 25, 1900. Employed on general duties in and around Philippines during Insurgency, except for a visit to Yokohama, Japan, from June 1-July 27, 1902. Continued in Philippines to April 19, 1903. After repairs at Yokohama, April 27-June 1, 1903, cruised off Chinese coast. Departed Hong Kong December 16, 1903, for U.S. via Singapore, Ceylon, India, Suez Canal, and Mediterranean ports. Arrived at Portsmouth, N.H. Navy Yard April 21, 1904. Out of commission for repairs from May 5, 1904-December 10, 1905.Joined Third Squadron, Atlantic Fleet, sailed from Norfolk on February 28, 1906 to patrol off Dominican Republic. Returned to Portsmouth Navy Yard on February 21, 1907, placed out of commission until March 7, 1907. Loaned to Michigan Naval Militia, sailed from Portsmouth on July 28, 1907, via St. Lawrence River, to Detroit; served on Lakes until World War I as training vessel.
Recommissioned April 6, 1917; departed Detroit July 17 for Newport, RI, arriving there on August 6, 1917. Patrolled off New England coast; arrived at New York, August 7, 1918, to escort two army tugs and barges to Bermuda.
Returned to Newport on October 1, 1918 and towed CHARLES WHITTEMORE to Charleston, SC, then revisited Bermuda to escort U.S. and French submarines to Newport. After more escort duty, was decommissioned at Portsmouth on June 18, 1919, and sold on October 16, 1919.
Disposition Abandoned in 1926.
