Vessel History

History Commissioned at Boston Navy Yard on October 3, 1876, and assigned to North Atlantic Squadron. Cruised to Liberia and along west coast of Africa in 1877. Assigned to South Atlantic Squadron in 1878-79. Sailed on Pacific Station, November, 1881-December, 1882, thence to Asiatic Squadron, 1883-1884. After repairs, returned to Asiatic Squadron and afforded protection to missionaries at Ponape, Caroline Islands, during native uprising. Returned to New York via Suez Canal, and placed out of commission in May, 1889. Designated as a training ship, took Annapolis cadets on a three-month cruise in 1893. This was followed by two long training tours with naval apprentices, January, 1894-April, 1898 and September, 1898 to December, 1903.Loaned to Ohio Naval Militia, 1904-1916, stationed at Toledo, and served Ninth Naval District, 1917-1926. Used by Naval Reserve, State of MN, as training ship, August, 1927, until stricken from Navy List on October 27, 1930.
Disposition Sold by Navy on December 23, 1930; reportedly dismantled at Duluth, MN, with hull being pulled up on beach and burned for scrap metal.
