History Built under U.S. Maritime Commission contract as L6-S-B1 class bulk carrier. Operated under bareboat charter to Columbia Transportation Co. (Oglebay Norton Co.), Cleveland, OH, 1960 (March)-1966.
As J.H. HILLMAN, JR.: Rammed coal dock at Detour, MI, when reverse gear failed to function, May 2, 1963. As CRISPIN OGLEBAY: Suffered damaged conveyor tunnel in a fire at AmShip's Toledo yard, February 10, 1975. Sold to Canadian owners and converted to cargo transfer ship for use at Hamilton, Ont., in 1995.
Disposition Broken up in 1998, by Port Weller Dry Docks, St. Catharine's, ON. Fore section and self-unloading equipment joined with the stern of CANADIAN EXPLORER to create CANADIAN TRANSFER.
