Vessel History

History As LAWRENCECLIFFE HALL: In collision, November 16, 1965, with British freighter SUNEK, c.fourteen miles below Quebec, in St. Lawrence River, in fog. Beached at head of Ile Orleans, where she sank in 30-36 feet of water. Was bound from Port Cartier, P.Q., for Conneaut, OH, with iron ore; no lives lost. Raised and refloated on March 16, 1966; taken to Lauzon, P.Q., for repairs by Davie Shipbuilding, Ltd. Back in service, up through Welland Canal, on August 4, 1966. Received minor repairs at Deep Diving Systems, Inc., Thunder Bay, Ont., in April 1978 because of damages to stem sustained in ice.
Grounded briefly in St. Lawrence River April 17, 1978. Freed self, suffering no apparent damage.
Struck the south abutment of the St. Louis lift bridge, six miles upstream from the Beauharnois lock in the St. Lawrence Seaway on July 21, 1980. She sustained considerable damage; however, there were no injuries. She was repaired at the Canadian Vickers Shipyard in Montreal.
