| History | Designed by H.J. Gielow. Built at cost of $2,000,000. Acquired by U.S. Navy on January 21, 1942 and commissioned on May 11, 1942. Departed Ecorse, MI, on May 27, 1942 and arrived at Washington, DC, on June 16, 1942. Used as flagship for Chief-Naval Operation (Admiral Ernest J. King) at Washington, DC, for duration of war. Decommissioned on May 11, 1946 and turned over to U.S. Maritime Commission for disposal on June 10, 1946.Sold in July, 1966, to Roy a Swayze, of Fairfax, VA, for $86,000, as planned unit for travel club, with refitting to take place in Haitian shipyard. Had passed down, Port Colborne, on November 16, 1962, for New London, CT, where she was laid up for four years. Apparently travel club plans failed to materialize as vessel was sold to Sailors' International Union for use as training ship. As DELPHINE: Burned and sank in Hudson River, in 1926. After four months on the bottom, was raised and rebuilt at cost of $750,000. Sank in 1940 off Manitoulin Island, Lake Huron. Raised and rebuilt. |
