Vessel History

Rebuilds Rebuilt and reduced to sloop barge, Buffalo, NY, May 27, 1862 (215.58 x 30.16 x 11.66; 731.66 tons).
History First enrollment issued at Buffalo, NY, May 14, 1847. Stranded on a reef near Rondeau, ON, on June 11, 1847. Broke shaft to one paddlewheel while off Ashtabula, OH, on September 28, 1847. Traveled to Cleveland, OH, on one wheel for repairs. Engine lowered one foot at this time to allow paddlewheels to reach deeper into the water and increase speed. Lost a crewman overboard on November 11, 1847. Cross head broken while on Lake Erie, May 1, 1851, $4,000 loss. Struck a reef off West Sister Island, Lake Erie, on December 12, 1851. Was worked free and limped to Sandusky, OH, for repairs, but sank at dock, $2,000 loss. SULTANA was raised and attempted to make the run to Buffalo, NY, before the froze over, but was trapped in ice until spring. In collision with scow-schooner HOME near North Pier at Erie, PA, in November 1855, $1,800 loss. HOME was sunk in the incident. Ran aground on Fox Island on June 18, 1856, $4,000 loss. Some machinery broke while at port in Green Bay, WI, in November 1856, $3,500 loss. In 1857, struck a reef off Hog Island. Sold under foreclosure by U.S. Marshal on May 18, 1857 for $3,800, although debts against the vessel totaled $10,000. On November 25, 1859, SULTANA broke its mooring lines in the Detroit River, striking a submerged pier and sank, later raised.
Disposition Lost off Pointe aux Barques, MI, Lake Huron, on July 21, 1863.
