Received first enrollment at Cleveland, OH, August 26, 1892.Cleared Globe yard on October 15, 1892. Was purchased by U.S. Navy on May 28, 1898, and final enrollment surrendered at Cleveland, OH, on June 2, 1898, the same day she was renamed USS FROLIC. Commissioned on July 6, 1898. Sailed from Portsmouth, NH, July 23, 1898, with mail for North Atlantic Squadron stationed off Cuba and Puerto Rico. Returned to Norfolk on September 17, 1898; out of commission, September 27, 1898-October 25, 1900. Assigned to Asiatic Squadron; cleared Hampton Roads, December 30, 1900 for Mediterranean, Suez, and Cavite, P.I., arriving there April 24, 1901. Cooperated with army during Philippine Insurrection: patrolled off southern Philippines, around Samar and aided vessels in distress. Made surveys after October, 1902; made patrols and towed targets for practice in China waters after February, 1904. Also investigated possible telegraph sites and served as transport. Decommissioned on March 31, 1906; after repairs, was placed on reduced commission, December 19, 1906, as yard craft at Cavite.
Decommissioned on July 31, 1907. Transferred to U.S. War Dept. on May 21, 1909, for service as dispatch boat in Philippines by U.S. Army Quartermaster Dept. |
