Vessel History

Rebuilds Converted to self-unloader by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., during winter, 1964-1965. Converted to oil burner at Bay City by Defoe Shipbuilding Co., winter 1973-74; also received GM Electro-Motive 2875 hp diesel (7356 gross - 5700 net).
History As NICOLET: Was extensively damaged by fire which raged aboard the ship for twenty-one hours after a spark from an acetylene torch ignited the conveyer belt. The fire spread forward from amidship destroying the pilot house, officers quarters, control equipment and radar and navigation gear. The fire began on December 29, 1979. The above took place while the vessel was in fitout at the Hans Hansen dock at Toledo, OH, at which location repairs were taken in hand during the following spring.As NICOLET: Suffered c.55 cracked plates off Beaver Island, Lake Michigan, on April 5, 1972, when squeezed by ice. Saved self by unloading portion of cargo with her own boom as WILLIAM G. MATHER stood by. Loss of $200,000.
Hit submerged object in Lake Huron in mid-October, 1977, sustaining bent propeller blade. Repaired at Stender Co. in Bay City, MI, October 12, 1977.
Sustained estimated $950,000 damage on December 9, 1977, when vessel surged while docked at Buffalo.
Sustained minor damage in November 1978 in collision with MERLE M. MCCURDY. Both Vessels anchored in South Channel of Straits of Mackinac because of weather when NICOLET broke loose and struck MCCURDY'S bow with her stern. Lost starboard anchor and suffered minor dents in hull.
Disposition Sold for scrapping, 1996. Arrived at Port Maitland on August 30.
